Unboxing the Roomba iRobot

When I was a kid one of my chores was to clean the floors. I hated vacuuming, sweeping and moping. I mean, I really hated it. The only thing I disliked more was mowing the lawn. Since I moved away from home I’ve procrastinated on this duty and and put it off till there was no more putting off.

About two years ago I saw my first Roomba and I have had it on my wish list ever since. So when I saw this iRobot Roomba 550 on sale at Costco, I knew it was time. Even more, my schedule has been the busiest it’s ever been and even if I wanted to clean the floors (which I don’t) I don’t have the time. So, Roomba to the rescue. I don’t have to do anything, but make sure it’s charged, there are no loose things that could get caught in it on the floor and I press a button. Roomba roams around and finds dirt and cleans it. It’s so wonderful. It really is. I’ve had it for just a week and so far, my floors are the cleanest they’ve ever been. I’ve heard some complaints about Roomba not picking up dust on hardwood, but I haven’t experienced that problem at all.

Unboxing for my friend in France named @masamuneto

Some time last year I met @masamuneto on twitter. He has kindly sent me a flower or plant of the day for months via twitter! Masa is a landscape designer and geek who is constantly working on beautiful scenery as well as cool geeky stuff. I’ve been asking his advice on what plants to get for my new place in San Diego. Today I got this really great little garden at the Thread Show in San Diego. The glass bubble garden comes from a place called Tend Living. I’ll probably keep this one at the Sony Electronics office. I still have a lot of moving in to do there before I feel at home. I think a nice little garden will help.

Unboxing some Social Media Inspiration

I got a very well wrapped box from my friend Adam Smith this week. It contained a book written by a man who has made a huge impact in the Social Media space by being his awesome self. His name is Gary Vaynerchuk. Gary is a social media phenomenon. What does that mean? It means that Gary has found success, in part, by being himself and authentically connecting with people via his show Wine Library TV, Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites.

If you get a chance to see Gary in person, I recommend it. I’ve seen him a couple times and he just makes you feel like “crushing it”. Follow him for a little bit and you’ll know what I mean by that.

Thank you Adam Smith, for the book and the wristband. You are cool.

My first big moving surprise!

As many of you know, I got a job in San Diego and I am moving this week. It’s a big deal since after 16 years of living here, my heart is truly in San Francisco and I love this town. On the flip side I couldn’t be more excited about my new job with Sony Electronics… I’ll tell you more about that later.

Today I got a big moving surprise from my childhood friend, Cindy. She knows I’m a farmer’s daughter that loves fruit because she is one too! I love the gift, it’s an Edible Arrangement full of various kinds of fruit. Ok, now that I’ve blogged it.. I’m gonna go eat some then get back to packing! Thank you Cindy!

Unboxing: Gift from the Hat Lady

Today’s Unboxing comes from a brand new online store called Freida’s Hat started by my friend Freida Wolden. If you’ve spent any time in Seesmic’s video community then you’ve probably met Frieda. She is often the very first person to say hello to new people and was the first to welcome me when I was introduced to the site in 2007. Freida can often be seen wearing a hat of some sorts talking about life, love, art, politics… you name it. In fact to this date, it’s possible that Frieda has the highest number of videos recorded by anyone in the Seesmic Community.

Something you may not know about her is that before she retired, Frieda owned a school where she taught computers and technology. I’ve often admired her Entrepreneurial spirit and find it no surprise that she is starting this new business. She is doing something she loves and is known for, so I like to think Frieda’s Hat is bound for success.

If you’re in the market for a fabulous ladies hat, visit her site. I love my beautiful wide brimmed camel colored hat. The quality is great and it’s really fun to wear! The hat bands are handmade by Freida and as you can hear my Dad say in the video, “This one hat with different ribbons it’s like wearing different hats all the time.” The hats are a great value at just around $40 and the bands are just under $6 each.

And last but not least, if you don’t know them yet, the special studio audience in this episode of Unboxing are my Mom & Dad! I decided to open up the box while we had afternoon tea at their farm.

My Friend Eric knows how much I love my iTouch. For my birthday this year he sent me a fabulous accessory. It’s an iTouch/iPod skin from a company called Infectious. It protects the shiny part from scratches while at the same time showing off another favorite thing of mine… WordPress! Cool gift Eric. I love it.

Am I a big geek for having “Twitter Jewelry”!? Probably, but I found this great jewelry designer in New York at the Brooklyn Flea Market called Birdhouse Jewelry and being the big Twitter junkie (and jewelry junkie) that I am, I had to get something to remember my trip to NYC for the 140 Character Conference! I also have a soft spot for local designers and artist and think it is important to support them with your dollars if you like their work!

The designs at Birdhouse Jewelry are very unique and most everything there was affordable. I bought this necklace and earrings for about $40, which I think is a good price. There was a nice variety of “Twitter Jewelry”… birds in various forms on necklaces, earrings and bracelets. Check out the Birdhouse Jewelry website for the newest collections and let the designer, Amy know that I sent you! She was to shy to be interviewed the day I was there!

I also want to add that the Brooklyn Flea Market is a sold thing to do when you’re in NYC. I went on Saturday AND Sunday and had a great time. There is a huge variety of vintage buys but also a great selection of local designers. I also got some lovely home made ice cream from a vendor at the Sunday market. If you’re in NYC over a weekend, save a few hours to go to the Brooklyn Flea!

Unboxing From Honolulu: The Purse Hanger

What do you get the girl that has everything?! Well, every year on April 29th, that is my problem because it’s my sister, Amerjit’s birthday. This year my brother-in-law, Larry gave her something I thought was pretty great, I’m not sure what it’s official name is… but I’m going to calling it the “Purse Hanger” and it comes from a store called Into in Downtown Honolulu. If you follow me on twitter you know I’m in Hawaii visiting family and because I think the “Purse Hanger” is such a fabulous find, I decided to share it with you as an episode of Unboxing. This particular innovation is really exceptional and around $20. I think anyone who has been stuck with a bag or purse at a bar or restaurant would agree this is a must have. I also want to say, if you’re looking for a place for great $6 Loatian plate lunch, Lemongrass Cafe is the place for you. No link, but I mention the address towards the end of the video.

Unboxing: Griffin iTrip

Well, the cross country drive has come to an end. I am finally in DC after being on the road for 3 weeks. If you haven’t heard of my SXSW and Beyond cross country adventure, let me just quickly tell you: My dear friend Rachael Joy and I drove from San Francisco to Austin for SXSW and then on to DC where she is going to live now. Along with our laptops, Rachael’s little Prius (she calls him Pete) was packed and almost overflowing with her belongings and some must have souvenirs we collected along the way.

Road Trip Essential

One thing I brought with me from San Francisco was a Griffin iTrip so we could share music from Rachael’s iPhone and my iTouch. Needless to say, when I was finally done playing every single Bhangra song I had, we started listening to Rachel’s playlist which included some music from a friend of her’s named Chuck Carrier. (We had a chance to meet Chuck in Atlanta where he played at Eddie’s Attic. We missed the show but where glad to find such a great venue for local music.)

The roadtrip soundtrack was an important part of our travel and we used the iTrip daily. While we were on the road, I decided to do a little product review of the Griffin iTrip. Yes, Rachael did ALL the driving, so I had to keep myself entertained somehow and did this little review as we drove out of lovely North Carolina! Unboxing: Sena Cases

At Mac World this year I was searching for a case for my iTouch and since it’s a gen 1 touch, it was actually a bit of a challenge. That is, until I found Sena. They do custom cases for the touch, the iPhone, laptops, celphones… you name it. Their demo booth at Mac World really stood out because they had a old fashioned leather artisan pounding away and creating the cases by hand. That’s how it’s done at Sena, hand made custom cases. Arton, is the man making the cases in this video. I want the record to show that I tried to talk to him, but he doesn’t speak English and I don’t speak Turkish. In the end, it really didn’t matter because it was so fun to watch him do his thing and he was happy to show of his handiwork.

Unboxing: Griffin Technology Wireless Speakers

Here’s another great innovation I saw at Mac World 2009. These Griffin Technology speakers are really fantastic if you want stereo sound without sacrificing a nice look. My friend Adam from notebooks.com really did a great job explaining why they were cool so I decided to feature him as the guest reporter for this episode of Unboxing! Hope you enjoy. (Hey Adam! When you see this post make sure to let everybody know if you’ve written an article about these speakers.) My favorite thing about the speakers was the lack of wires! Hip hip horaaay for wireless home electronics.

I have a handful of Griffin Technology products and I must say they have been pretty cool. Do you have any? What do you think?

Unboxing: Ahnu Footwear

I got a box at the farm from a company called Ahnu Footwear. They’re pretty fabulous for people like me who are active and also kind of style conscious. I do a lot of walking and I go to yoga frequently, so I expect I’ll be getting a lot of use from these. I’ll post a review here once I’ve had a chance to wear them around a bit. I noticed too that they have shoes for men and women. Cool.

I’m curious, what do you think about when buying shoes for walking and activity. I’m a sucker for a good price and a unique look. So far, the Ahnu shoes are working for me. Watch the video below and see for yourself.

Rickshaw bags is a local San Francisco bag design and manufacturing company. I decided to highlight them because not only do they make quality custom bags, but they employ locally. A majority of the work on Rickshaw bags is done here in SF. Good stuff.

If you’re reading this and you don’t live in San Francisco or an urban area like it, the laptop/bike bag may not mean to you what it means to people like me. Here, your bag not only is a sign of your fashion sense… it’s also truly an important way to get your stuff between home and work. I don’t mean this to be funny, because the truth is that we have limited ways of getting around this crowded town. Walking, biking and busing are great, but when you’ve got a lot of stuff, including a MacBook to schlep around, your bag takes on a whole other level of importance. Beyond that, my Mac is one of my most valued possession and when I take it out I want it to be safe.

I do believe Rickshaw is filling a big niche, creating a quality, custom laptop & bike bag. I’m going to send Mark a note and get that tour he offered of the Rickshaw office. Who wants to come along?

Unboxing: Iomega & Retrospect

I bought my first tera drive this year and it was a pretty fantastic investment. It’s a Western Digital drive that I didn’t research much before I buying. It was on sale and exactly what I needed so I got it. Now that I have it though, I’m pretty addicted to storing stuff, especially since I’m vlogging and video takes up a lot of space. So, on the advice of my friend Adam, who I went to Mac World with this year, I took a minute to find out more about the Iomega drives. Adam says they are one of the standards when it comes to external storage. I don’t know about that, but I do know that what I saw, looked good. I’m such a sucker for style.

Any of you have an Iomega and do you recommend it? What external drive do you like and why? More importantly, do you want the shot glass I got from Retrospect? I don’t need it and I’ll mail it to you if you like! =)
