Earthquake!

Earthquake!

I’m a lifelong Californian and in all my years on this soil, I’ve never experienced an earthquake like what I felt today – not even in my years in San Francisco! I’m not exactly sure what the stats are on today’s quake, I’ve heard reports go between 7.2 to 3.6. All I know is that my building swayed for what seemed like minutes (it was only a few seconds), the glass doors were rattling and the table I was working on wouldn’t stop moving. My tip to get out of the building came when I heard things fall to the ground and my neighbors running down the hall to exit.

I of course, tweeted “earthquake?” the moment I felt it- before I realized that I could be in danger. Luckily I wasn’t, but I was scared. Not much freaks me out anymore. I like to think I’m an independent girl but days like today really make me miss my family, my parents and my friends.

This vlog post is inspired by that scared/sad/worried feeling and what happened right after as I checked back online to see what others had seen and felt. There were so many tweets and replies from friends who experienced the quake and others who wanted to make sure I was ok. @joyofzen was the first “wow, you felt it too? Are you in SD right now?” It’s funny how simply being reminded that I wasn’t really alone instantly lifted my spirits. My friend @solipsistic is a pretty tough guy, “That was a pretty kick ass earthquake. Not disaster movie strength but enough for me to way WTF!!!” Yes, WTF was pretty much my feeling too and his tweet proved to me that I wasn’t just being a baby.

Nothing makes the world feel small like instantly seeing well wishes come in from around the globe, @Lian_O checking in from the Netherlands, @Mikaelj from Sweeden, @starmike from the East Coast and @Dramagirl from Australia… friends who are sprinkled around the globe in touch even before a call from my Mom!

I know I’m a bit mopey in the vlog post above, but there were tweets from new San Diego friends that reminded me to smile. @ShadowCatSD tweeted me, “Welcome to San Diego! You have now been baptized. ;) ” and then there was some banter with @blogworld, @coachdeb and @sugarjones, starting with this tweet from @blogworld,  “@sukhjit that was your welcome to San Diego: earthquake for you and @coachdeb 8)” and ending with this tweet from the sassy @sugarjones “@CoachDeb @sukhjit @blogworld Okay… who wants a beer? ;)

As I mention in the vlog post above, I don’t post like I use to, for whatever reason, but tonight I couldn’t help but make note of this day and of the great people who helped me get through it.

    Hello Sukhjit,
Glad to hear you are OK. It is nice hearing someone articulate their thoughts and reactions. Honestly, I myself am unsure how one should react in the wake of such situations. Of late I have the distinct feeling of excessive social ediquitte missteps on my part. But I digress, just remember, that though you might physically live alone, you are not alone. Hope the chocolate helped :)
    With respect,
    William

You were doing your taxes? With TurboTax, right? :-)
Seriously, glad you're okay. And welcome to San Diego.

Thanks William for the nice note. I actually kind of felt silly for having such a dramatic reaction when the impact was so minimal. But I really had to try and capture the experience especially as it related to the feeling of having friends around, even though there was no one physically with me at the time. I've got good people! I'm very lucky.

The other thing that really puts things into perspective is seeing the epicenter: http://mashable.com/2010/04/04/mexicali-earthqu… Take a look at the pictures here. Puts things into perspective. Thanks for the comment!

OMG! So busted. I actually am gathering my stuff to send to my accountant back in the Bay Area. Last year was a complicated one. Next year I will be using TurboTax. Though life has been busy and challenging since I've moved to SD.. having one source of income next wear will certainly make tax time a little easier. :) Thanks for the note Christine! Love seeing a comment from you!

Sukhjit! So good to see a video post from you. I miss your sukhjit.me posts! So glad to hear you're alright too and to get your first hand account. It's one little slice of time that there is the earthquake, the iPad, and Easter. And oh yeah, the launch of Cooking Capsules Brunch for Android of course, with the Apple Puff Pancake episode that you produced, shot and edited with me :-) I'm so proud of our work and blessed by our friendship. I miss you! Take it easy down there and see you soon. xo Mary Ann

btw- Isn't it better to wait it out in a doorway or “duck and cover” (as we both did in school growing up in California) rather than go outside?

I am a San Diego transplant to the Bay Area and seem to miss big earthquakes! I feel for you and am glad , of course, you and everyone else is fine. I can imagine what it felt like and your vulnerability so deserves a virtual HUG!!!

  • Jagsinghb

Glad you're alright and managed to keep your head on on shoulders. sukhjit you've shown great composure by writing the post above. Thanks for giving us the sense of reality that you and others affected are facing. Regards, @jagsinghb on twitter

I am incredibly relieved that neither you (or any other friends and family) were harmed. I can't even begin to imagine how scary that earthquake must've been– but hey– this will only make you stronger! And as you mentioned, we're here checking in. Sorry I haven't been around in a while, I kicked myself for missing the news on your move to SD. I suppose this was your official welcome indeed, I hope to never receive such a welcome. >___< Be careful and take care of yourself woman! We're with you both virtually and in spirit. Sending good vibes to Cali.

Good to see you! Enjoyed the video. :) I felt the earthquake a little bit here in Phoenix as well. Emphasis on little bit. By the video, you were obviously a lot more shaken up. (pun intended)

Happy Day After Easter (by 3.5 hours when I'm writing this) :)

    Hello darling Sukhjit!

Strangely enough, at the very time the news came on Twitter that an earthquake had just occured, although I was at my computer, I missed it because the phone rang, and it was a long and stressful conversation, that kept my eyes averted from my screen.

So when I came to my sense (the phone call lasted for more than an hour!) my timeline was already busy with other things, and all of a sudden I learnt about what had happened. And saw also your tweet thanking for having reached out to you.

I am so glad that you decided to vlog about it: I could not interject on twitter anymore, it was “passé” ;-) twitter is for the instant, isn't it? So I came to your blog, because I knew I could pay you a real visit here, with a big real hug, for your scare, for your torn emotions. This is truly shaky, and it does bring feelings to the surface, feeling of powerlessness, of loneliness, of weakness.

I am taking you in my virtual arms across the continent, and thanking good fortune that no damage were done, I learnt that some damage hit Mexico, and my prayers go to the wounded and those who suffered material losses too.

My hope is for you that you recoupe as fast as possible from your scare, and find good ways to be thankful and connected to the ground… even when it shakes us.

Lots of love goes your way.

@xluck I think you're probably right, except for when you live in an apartment building. Then, from what I understand, you're better off leaving. Have you heard different. I'm kind of ashamed of us for not knowing this kind of info!!!

  • http://twitter.com/sukhjit sukhjit

Heather, I so very much appreciate the visit, the comment and especially the virtual hug. So did we switch spots? I hope you're liking the Bay. Boy, did I miss it this weekend. :) Hope to see you again.

Hey @jagsinghb It's so nice of you to stop by… and of you to say I was composed, though I clearly got teary eyed while recording my video blog. I haven't been blogging a lot, but I just had to after yesterday afternoon. It was actually very therapeutic… but even more than that I really wanted to have a central spot to gather the tweets and stories that helped me get through the afternoon. Thank you for reading this blog post and for leaving a note.

Hello @sakiwaki! Your note made my night! How lovely to see your message. Yes, I have moved to San Diego.. I came here in mid September, and can I say, it has been an adjustment. I really like it here and I feel so lucky to have the coolest job in the world. I'm glad to know you will be checking in on my Sony blog too! There will be some big changes ahead. … hang on… I just felt an aftershock. Ugh.

  • http://twitter.com/sukhjit sukhjit

Hi Jeremy. Thanks for the visit. Yeah, there has been some shaking and stirring here. Still feeling the aftershocks. Have you felt anything more in Phoenix?

  • http://twitter.com/sukhjit sukhjit

Thank you Kandy! It's ok. Still a little shaky today, but it's better. I'm almost wondering if I'm just getting use to the rolling ground. It's so weird.

Thank you Laura! I hope you are ok. How is your Dad?
