The reason being: the site better mimics the realities of the "real world." Yes, there are people with whom I disagree wholeheartedly on the site. We have spirited debates all the time. But the site isn't just a place to go and have a cathartic moment of hurling insults in an anonomous space; it's built with the concept of enabling individuals to form groups around issues and topics that interest them, and to track and follow specific legislation, or to interact with elected officials. Just like neighbors, we may not agree on who should be President, but we might find that we are both passionate about protecting our national parks; or on a local level, we both think a rec center for the kids would be a great idea, so we join up and create a grassroots group to gain local support for that. This is the stuff of real life. We don't only interact with people who look like and think like we do in real life, and so it is online. I've learned more about my own biases by putting my own thoughts up and allowing others to thoughtfully disagree, than I would if I only had people say, "Preach on! You tell em!"
