So You Want To Be A Community Manager…

I had a chance to spend some time with, community strategist, Connie Bensen last month. Connie was in town for a social media strategies conference where she was part of a panel discussing building community at the enterprise level. Connie has made a name for herself as a real leader in community building and social media. I’ve learned quite a bit talking with her and reading her blog http://conniebensen.com. She successfully transitioned her decade long career in the public library system into new media and online community building, networking and branding.

Online community building is a growing field. As more companies get savvy to crowd sourcing, using social sites for customer relations and brand building it’s an opportunity for social media geeks like me who enjoy working with people to use their twitter, facebook and other web skills to get paid. If a company or brand decides to enter the online social scene, they better do it right otherwise, they’ll run the risk of being an uninvited guest to a cocktail party. From what I could tell Connie’s experience and philosophy for being successful include two things I believe it whole heartedly; listen and take care of your people, both your community and your employees.

I met Connie and her husband Stuart for a cup of coffee at Cheesecake Factory on top of Macy’s in San Francisco’s Union Square. We had a great talk and Connie was kind enough to let me film a quick interview. She shared some tips for anyone who would like to be a part of the social media and community building world.

I must also note, that I met Connie initially on Twitter. She pushed my follow after I left Seesmic and thru some very nice 140 character (or under) direct messages, lifted my spirits and helped me feel excited about the opportunities that are ahead. I in turn gave Connie and her husband a crazy Punjabi taxi ride in my Mini Cooper on their first night in SF! For me it is another online friendship that has lead to a real world bond.

  • Hey Sukhjit,
What an awesome job you did of putting this together! (I'm sorry that I'm so late in commenting. :( )

It was totally awesome meeting you! Thomas has great friends. :)
I'm going to put up a really cute pic of you & Stuart. The Punjabi ride in your Mini Cooper was THE best!
We'll be back to San Fran next May for Community 2.0.

Thanks again for sharing your amazing talents! I'm totally impressed!!
  • Connie! I am pretty thrilled that you've seen this vlog AND you approve! It was such a pleasure meeting you. Our conversation at Cheesecake factory was one of the most motivating and inspiring discussions I've had since I left Seesmic and it helped jump started my ideas for the future. I'm pretty excited about what's ahead.

I was just thinking about your email and planning to respond when I saw your comments here! I'll be sending you an email back shortly.

Take good care Connie. I hope your family is well. I've been following your tweets and sending good energy your way. --Sukhjit

  • I smiled at your comment about the hug at the end. I learned long ago that there is more to life than a handshake. Bloggers & my online friends get hugs because there are so few times when our paths cross in person.
  • @balavoine So nice to see you & thanks for the comment!
  • ahh - the ability to comment on comments! Thanks for recommending my blog. I can't wait to hear about your projects for 2009! May life bring you joy, Sukhjit!
  • I loved you hug, that was the best part!!!
    You are a star!!

  • This is only a test
  • @pogobrian Yay! Test was successful! Great to see you!
  • Nice to see you too... The most beautiful Sikh OF ALL TIME! I'm actually thinking of turning Vurtego.com into more of a social network, content rich, fun stuff hangout and interact and watch cool videos (and buy a pogo stick) site. I've got tons of content from Planet X - skate, surf, snow, moto, etc. that I can use for various channels... Not quite sure where to start though.
  • Hey Pogo Brian! I was just reading this again and wondering if you have looked at a site called ning.com... it comes to mind when thinking of a way for you to collect your various elements while building community... That's just one thing... I'm still formulating a few other ideas for ya!

  • I do. Let's talk. I think it's a great idea.
  • Sukhjit!! Hope you're doing awesome. I popped in to see how the site was coming along and like it a lot - What did you use to put it all together? Did you do it all yourself?

    Tell Rachael I said hi!

  • OMG! I was just thinking about you the other day wondering how you and your family have been... Thank you so much for coming to my site. It's been a great experience and I am having a great time producing for my site. I've got media from out pogo stick interview. I'm going to post a story here on sukhjit.me.

Hope to catch up with you soon PogoBrian.

    DeeZee (OK, fine, Diana)
  • Diana! How great to see you here. Thanks for commenting on my blog. It's pretty incredible to wear every hat in this production. I'm very happy. I'm working on the production value.. the filming is the most difficult thing. FYI-I'm editing on Final Cut Express. It's a magnificent program.

Hope your productions are going well... and that we can meet in person soon to catch up!

PS... RSS instead of bookmark! It's better.
  • love you sukhjit! awesome blog...
  • Zac! You absolutely make my day! I'm so pleased that you like my blog. It means my hard work it paying off. I was motivated by my Seesmic community to do this and I'm so glad I did. It's really rewarding to see you guys show up and leave comments.

    w00t! a new post!

I totally agree! ...as a company that produces product, the employees should not only know their product but use it as well.

In the software world we call that "dog food-ing". So now you can ask software developers... "do you dog food your app?" =)
  • Hang on! Dogfooding? Alan, you may need to send me a video explanation on this one! I need more info.. and I certainly don't to use the term wrong and sound dumb in front of my developer friends!

And, btw YES! I am thinking about a cross country trip in time to get to DC for the inauguration... no way I would come that far and not try and meet friends in the North East.

Awesome. Well if you stop near Philly, I'll make sure to take you on a mini tour of the area. Not to mention all of the great places to eat! I'm hungry just thinking about it. hehe =D

Yeah when I find a moment, I'll explain it to you via video. That's what it's called "dogfood-ing".

  • I don't know much about social media strategies, but that is some good video editing :)
  • Andy! You are very kind. I have always had a soft spot for editing and am so happy to have the chance to share stories with my friends. I'm working with Final Cut Express by the way.

    Talk to you soon!
  • Nice always good to hear other peoples thought on this subject. Soon I will be doing a video comparing the approach of 1938Media and Gary Vaynerchuk on community and branding. nice post hugz!
  • Owen! Can't wait to see you story comparing those two styles, they are far sides of the spectrum... I appreciate both, I think there are fans of either... I certainly connect more with Gary's style... but the beauty of having online content is you can do what's right for you and find an audience that connects.

Thanks a million for the comment. I appreciate it.
